The Iris Fine Art Gallery is now open in Pacific Grove, CA.

Black and white images by Paul van Gelder are on display at the  Iris Fine Art Gallery in Pacific Grove, CA.  The Iris Gallery is just a few blocks from downtown, fine restaurants and the Monterey Bay Aquarium.  Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, a photographer’s paradise where Paul shot extensively, is also nearby.

Paul’s work consists primarily of nature studies of Point Lobos, the California Coast, Carmel Valley, the Sierra and Yosemite National Park.  He also traveled regularly to photograph the Southwest and Pacific Northwest.

     As a young child growing up on Long Island in Wyandanch, New York, Paul discovered old Popular Photography magazines in the basement.  He spent hours poring over them, and was enchanted with photographs by Ansel Adams and Edward Weston.  He was amazed by the grand eloquence of Adam’s Yosemite, and thought Weston’s Pepper #30 was a Brancusi sculpture!

 Paul wrote, “…from a very early age I was always fascinated with flowers, trees, nature, clouds and the changing light and would write to various chambers of commerce and receive brochures of different geographic areas until becoming fixated on California and the Big Trees and the magnificent Sierra Range:  The Range of Light as John Muir so aptly called it.”

     As a youth, Paul spent his ice cream money on 120 film for a Kodak box camera.  He learned darkroom technique from his father, Norman van Gelder, who dabbled in photography among his myriad of hobbies and had a brilliant and scientific mind that liked to investigate many things.  He would have been what is called a Renaissance man.  Whereas Norman’s favorite subjects to photograph were his wife and children Paul felt drawn to the natural world and spent long hours wandering the hills behind their Long Island home.  He also studied in great detail all the photographs and writings of not only Adams and Weston but all the other photographers he could learn about.

 His eye for beauty and form was nurtured by his mother Dorothy, who later became the director of the  prestigious Joan Whitney Payson Country Life Gallery in Locust Valley, New York.

     Paul  migrated to California in 1962. Admiring the work of Edward Weston, he was using a Deardorff  8×10 mahogany camera.  He went on to use many different sizes and styles of view cameras over the next 40 years.

Paul continued to study everything he could find about darkroom technique until he was so knowledgeable that Steve Anchell devoted a long section of his book, A Darkroom Cookbook, to Paul’s work.  He continued working in his darkroom, remaining dedicated to film photography  and it wasn’t until 2001 that Paul experimented with digital cameras, converting the color images to black and white and printing with fabulous new equipment and techniques.  He said, “The finest photos that appeal to me and my own way of working are not as ‘well-studied’ as you might think.  The well-studied part comes after the photo is taken and hanging on the wall.  Actually, in a sense, Nature is the most merciless of subjects because you can never say, ‘wait – hold it’.  Most great photos come to the artist in a flash with no time to think and the well-studied effects here are concerning camera and equipment.”

 

       The first public exhibition of his art was in collaboration with the late poet Josh Jossi at the Pacific Grove Art Center.  Together they produced the book, Back To The Source, which featured Paul’s photographs.  In the following years, Paul published several books of his photographs:  Gambrels Of The Sky, Monterey County & Yosemite National Park, and 2 different versions of Zenstones~Zenrocks.

        In 1998, Paul won the top 5 prizes in the Monterey Regional Parks photography contest.  His entries to “The Celebration Of Open Space” were under the pen name P. David Foote, a pen name that he chose in homage to his father, Norman Foote van Gelder and to his brother, Peter Foote van Gelder.   Paul’s work was also chosen to be shown at the Carmel Art Institute in 2012 and he had a one man show in February, 2019 at the Bistro Gallery at the Healdsburg Senior Center.

After years of living in Marin, Sonoma, Mendocino, Cambria and Big Sur, he moved to the Monterey Peninsula and focused on his beloved Point Lobos, with monthly trips to Yosemite and The Southwest.   He was designing a book, The Stops of Point Lobos, for which he was inspired by his love and admiration for  The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido by Hiroshige.   About his proposed book he wrote, “Over many years there are many regular stops I make when at Pt. Lobos and always I can be assured of finding the ancient voices ready to confide their deep mysterious secrets to me if I am truly ready to listen.  The hesitation is always surprisingly, on my part, never theirs.  It is as if they are constantly in conversation about the deeper needs, necessities and directions of our human consciousness and if only we quiet our own dialogue and listen we will hear amazing things that truly can help to transform us and move us away from the great fear ridden and empty society that appears to be escalating at a frightening rate.” 

Paul’s notebooks, letters, diaries and logs of his photo journeys have inspired friends, family, strangers, writers and photographers.  They enrich our appreciation of his photography, as well as our understanding of his photographic quest.  The following excerpt is as detailed and vast as Paul’s remarkable photographs.

“Though many outward manifestations of disruption appear in the external world, they are really like the great tides ~ shuffling the stones, sand, and wood of a beautiful, favorite beach.  Only our fixed time-space-fear oriented perception locks us into thinking something is really wrong!

     But I think each of us knows that his conscious life is entirely dependent on a greater actuality.  I leave this mostly at the intuitive level, because, try as we might, the words, symbols, and all the systems we have devised can only bring us to the fringe of this greater dimension which can’t be truly materialized in a 3-D system.  For some, this sort of side by side personality imbues the world with an incredible beauty and illumination.  As this awareness increases, one is transformed and one’s life truly changes.  Of course, along with this, the greater inner landscape tries to manifest itself in the outward world – a translation into physical events – and this becomes our ‘existence’ and primary form of ‘knowledge’.  At a certain level of awareness, this allows one to create a very meaningful, symbolic language of great importance to human beings and evolution.  Artists can be like mapmakers trying to lay out the roads and terrain for other travelers to use as a guide on their journey.

     Just as certain events appear to occur of their own, such as Nature, on another level they are beautiful forms of a highly harmonious consciousness.  So, likewise, our own thoughts are producing landscapes elsewhere.  To be cognizant and direct them is all important!”
